• Employers in every state, including Pennsylvania, are subject to the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which allows eligible employees to take unpaid leave up to 12 weeks in a 12 month period. Eligible KCASD employees are those that have worked for the school district for at least one year, and worked at least 1,250 hours during the previous year.

FMLA leave is available if the eligible employee needs time off for one or more of the following circumstances:

    • bond with a new child
    • recuperate from a serious health condition
    • care for a family member with a serious health condition
    • handle qualifying exigencies arising out of a family member’s military service, or
    • care for a family member who suffered a serious injury during active duty in the military (eligible for 26 weeks)

If you are not an eligible KCASD employee and need time off for one of the afore mentioned instances, you may submit a written request to the Board of Directors requesting unpaid leave. Written requests should be submitted to the Business Office for inclusion on the Board agenda.
