• 2019-2020  KARNS CITY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT CHARGED MEAL PROCEDURE

    *No student who requests a meal will be denied a main lunch option, unless the student's parent or gaurdian has provided written permission to withhold a school lunch.

    *Direct communication regarding money owed will be made to the parent or gaurdian only. Students may deliver communications in letter form, address to the parent/gaurdian. The letter must be in an envelope marked "Confidential Parent/Gaurdian Only".

    *Meals served to students should not be removed or exchanged as a result of overdrawn cafeteria accounts or free/reduced status. When it is discovered a student has selected a meal and they do not have positive funds to purchase it, the student will be permitted to have the items without discussion. The meal will be charged to the child's lunch account.

    *The principal or designee will inform the parent'gaurdian to manage his/her child's meal account. Parents can establish limits or prohibit the charging of food items when in deficit in writing at www.schoolcafe.com.

    *When a-la-carte limits are in place, food can be removed from the child at the register.

    *Weekly notices for account balances of $5.00 or less will be sent home by the food service department to the parent/gaurdian in a confidential envelope.

    *When negative balances of $10.00 or greater exist, a phone call will be made electronically by the cafeteria to the parent/gaurdian.

    *When negative balances of $50.00 or greater exist, a certified letter will be sent from the business office to the parent/gaurdian.

    *When all components of a breakfast or lunch are not taken, the cashier must charge a-la-carte prices for the food items.

    *If a child receives a free or reduced meal and has a condition that limits certain components of a lunch, the appropriate Pennsylvania Department of Education form must be completed.

    *Free/Reduced Meal applications ewill be sent home at the start of each school year. Applications are available upon request throughout the year on the district's website, School Cafe App, and through the cafeteria office.

    *Translated applications are available upon request. Please see the ESL coordinator for assistance.

    *Employees cannot charge meals or a-la-carte items.

    *Cafeteria staff will be trained annually on the guidelines of Policy 808 and the procedures of Attachment 808.

    *No student who owes money or does not have money for a school meal will be publically identified, stigmatized or be required to do work or chores.
